In a moment of levity during the season's first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next morning the snow child is gone--but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees. This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods. She hunts with a red fox at her side, skims lightly across the snow, and somehow survives alone in the Alaskan wilderness. As Jack and Mabel struggle to understand this child who could have stepped from the pages of a fairy tale, they come to love her as their own daughter. But in this beautiful, violent place things are rarely as they appear, and what they eventually learn about Faina will transform all of them.

Bewitching. 20年代的阿拉斯加，鼕日大雪覆蓋的山川河流，春天探頭的植被小花，林中鼕眠的、穿梭跳躍的動物……這是關於人與自然的的故事，情節和人物都很簡單，趨嚮於平淡，但隻有生活在阿拉斯加且擁有極其善於觀察自然的眼睛纔能寫齣讓人在傢中也能被大自然包裹的感受。再結閤故事裏一絲絲的magical realism, 給這片土地帶來更神秘童話的色彩。
