After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. 直到现在，第一次世界大战的阴霾仍然在欧洲大陆的上空挥之不去，不为别的，只因那场战争太惨烈，太血腥，代价也太大了。战争的起因他，诸多国家的矛盾纠葛在一起，被长久的因为某种目的被压制了下来，忽然有一天，这种矛盾已经没有办法再压制，它爆发了。于是，这场战争就开始...
