这本开始花开N朵，各表N枝。总体是明暗交替。Aragon等卷入人族对抗魔道的正面战场，Rohan的昏君佞臣、Isengard的Ent大战像战国般精彩。Frodo（伪）驯服Gollum作向导不能更震惊。相比西边的酣战，Sam/Frodo与孤独如影随形。结尾两章的华彩：（几乎是）打破第四面墙的对于神话、探险和自我选择的讨论，以及Sam的勇猛和抉择。真正主角其实不是表面上的那几个！
