But it was C. P. Snow's Rede lecture of 1959 that brought it to prominence and began a public debate that is still raging in the media today. This fiftieth anniversary printing of The Two Cultures and its successor piece, A Second Look (in which Snow responded to the controversy four years later) features an introduction by Stefan Collini, charting the history and context of the debate, its implications and its afterlife. The importance of science and technology in policy run largely by non-scientists, the future for education and research, and the problem of fragmentation threatening hopes for a common culture are just some of the subjects discussed.

Literary individuals在“左”，Scientists在“右”，原為作者在劍橋的著名講座。作者不隻是想錶達文理科的巨大鴻溝，而是身為科學傢和小說傢站在二者之間，強調兩方相同的重要性。尤其是在二戰後崛起的某檔的壓力下，藉此嚮掌權的貴族階層即、及人文學者呼籲科學研究的重要性。然而難逃日不落帝國的傲慢，文中多處體現瞭對第三世界帶有輕視的同情觀。但無可置疑，本書在學術界和社會層麵引發瞭持久的辯論——文，還是理。

自然科學的使命的瞭解客觀世界，從而改造客觀世界；人文科學的願景是錶達人作為主體的道德價值。缺乏這兩者的溝通，會讓我們「 interpret the past wrongly, to misjudge the present, and to deny our hopes of the future」。但是悲觀的是，隨著科技的發展，個體在社會生態中，會越來越被割裂。人性中的自大，在一個廣義的基數中，隻會促使群體間的隔離。而這時候，具有人文關懷的精英們纔是真正被時代需要的。
