每看到梵高的生活有所好轉就掩捲不忍讀下去，不忍看到之後更悲慘的生活，為妓女咬掉耳朵、和高更決裂、在精神院自殺……作者細節勾勒得非常詳細生動。加歇醫生引用亞裏士多德的話評論梵高“No excellent soul is exempt from a mixture of madness”，就是“不瘋魔，不成活”麼。
