于2001年11月去世的贡布里希教授恩斯特爵士，功绩勋章获得者（O.M），高级英帝国勋爵士（C.B.E），是他那个时代最伟大、最有影响的艺术史家之一。他1909年生于维也纳，1936年进入伦敦的瓦尔堡研究院任教职，并从1959年起，担任伦敦大学古典传统历史教授及院长，直至1976年退休。他最著名的著作是《艺术的故事》，最早出版于1950年，现已出至16版。其他学术著作还包括：《秩序感——装饰艺术的心理学研究》（1979年），以及11部文集，均由费顿出版社出版。
