於2001年11月去世的貢布裏希教授恩斯特爵士，功績勛章獲得者（O.M），高級英帝國勛爵士（C.B.E），是他那個時代最偉大、最有影響的藝術史傢之一。他1909年生於維也納，1936年進入倫敦的瓦爾堡研究院任教職，並從1959年起，擔任倫敦大學古典傳統曆史教授及院長，直至1976年退休。他最著名的著作是《藝術的故事》，最早齣版於1950年，現已齣至16版。其他學術著作還包括：《秩序感——裝飾藝術的心理學研究》（1979年），以及11部文集，均由費頓齣版社齣版。

In testing his arguments he ranges over the history of art, noticing particularly the accomplishments of the ancient Greeks, and the visual discoveries of such masters as Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt, as well as the impressionists and the cubists. Gombrich's triumph in "Art and Illusion" arises from the fact that his main concern is less with the artists than with ourselves, the beholders.
