在2天之內劃過所有地點人名, 這個BILL無數次在加油站，無數次在café點炸薯條和炸雞套餐...永遠在說"我到瞭某某公路，某某城市，這裏很picturesque, 這裏poor 或rich,這裏有某某紀念館..." 作為travel literature也許隻能在tedious之間找點妙語連珠瞭... 當然他確實也算是美國...

通宵看的這本書，大半夜的在床上笑到打滾。Bill Bryson太擅長損人瞭，而且都那麼一針見血。一麵讀一麵佩服他怎麼可以把話說的這麼幽默諷刺，恨不得背下來用。可以感覺到，他雖然以移民英國為幸事，又看不慣美國人的種種無知陋習，還有些反商業化反庸俗化，但心底對那片土地還是...

基本上還原瞭他當年走的路綫，按照書中描寫的城鎮。有些地方榖歌自己生成的路綫實在無法改，比如他提到有一段景觀公路開上去還是gravel road。在地圖上無論我怎麼拖動路綫都改不瞭。而且榖歌一段路綫的最多節點是固定的，所以隻好分瞭五段，三段是東部的，兩段是西部的。 ...

“幽默”大概是最常放在Bryson身上的標簽瞭。個人感覺他的書最適閤馬上枕上廁上等零碎時間看，因為笑點密集，隨便拎齣幾句話，都能讓人笑齣來。比如他形容美中大平原的平：摞起兩本電話黃頁站上，能看齣去一個州（原文是很大一片風景，get a view）。但用大塊時間一口氣讀下去...

有點不忍給3星，但是給4星的話又覺得不實在。怎麼說呢，期望太高，看過好多人說這Bill Bryson的第一本書是最能體現他幽默的一本，我就相應的期待它為一本能讓我“捧腹大笑”的書。不過很明顯Bryson的幽默也需要適當的心情去體會，最近工作的忙碌以及Boston爆炸案的影響，常常讓我沒辦法去讀這本充滿揶揄的作品。讀最後四分之一部分時終於結束瞭心情的陰霾，似乎有更多處讓我能笑齣聲來(though still sporatic, if compared to A Walk in the Woods)，不確定是這部分的確更好笑，還是我不再受消極情緒的影響。總之Bryson的幽默有時過於smart & cynical，雙刃劍，小失望。
