喬伊斯在《尤利西斯》中廣泛運用瞭“意識流“的創作手法，形成一種嶄新的風格，成為現代派小說的先驅。他不僅在遣詞造句方麵刻意創新，而且運用瞭大量的典故、引語和神話。小說齣版後，其中某些詞句被認為“淫穢”而受到指摘，因此長期被禁止在英美發行，直到1933年這部巨著纔得以公開與英美讀者見麵。
