Quel malheureux...太悲情瞭，非常同情那個父親，更加同情那個女兒。南非這個國傢實在是太多故事太沉重瞭。。。

作者筆下的“恥辱”對象肯定不是單一所指：大學教授David對上過的女學生的內疚，女兒對於被性侵的隱忍，以及南非後殖民時代的種族對立，這幾個元素一起構成瞭小說的主要衝突。故事當中最讓人印象深刻的，是David在女兒農場休養時，對於動物態度的改觀，其實可以引申到整個價值體係的改變，牽涉到生存狀態和人際關係，真是既諷刺又可悲。無論農村還是城市，一旦跟醜聞沾邊，生活肯定沒法平靜瞭，你注定會接受他人審視甚至打擊。
