哈爾·剋萊濛特，本名哈裏·斯塔布斯，生於美國麻省，曾獲哈佛天文學學士學位，二戰時入伍，成為一名轟炸機飛行員。退伍後成為中學教師，長期教授科學課程。

剋萊濛特一生共創作瞭十五部長篇以及大量中短篇小說。1954年，《重力使命》開始在《驚奇科幻》連載，成為他的代錶作，該書也是科幻史上硬科幻小說的代錶。

剋萊濛特在科幻作傢和讀者中具有崇高的聲望。他是1991年世界科幻大會的主賓，1998年入選科幻/奇幻名人殿，美國科幻奇幻作傢協會於1999年星雲奬頒奬儀式上授予他科幻大師稱號。

這是我讀的最硬的科幻,硬到幾乎啃不動,我不得不一邊讀一邊迴憶早就丟到腦後的物理化學,有時還會停下來算算公式什麼的,但我不得不承認,讀起來實在很爽.因為真實.所以痛快.

我突然想起來我是在高三某一個晚自習的時候讀的這本書，邊讀邊在心裏默默估算。感謝這樣的書使我消除憂愁，度過艱難的歲月。
