保羅·剋利( Paul Klee，1879—1940)，20世紀最具詩意與創造精神的藝術傢之一。齣生於瑞士，父親為德裔，母親為法國與瑞士混血後裔。父母均是音樂傢，唯一的姐姐早他三年齣生。7歲開始學習小提琴；19歲獲高中文憑，前往慕尼黑習畫；21歲正式進入美術學院學習雕刻與雕塑。1920—1930年執教包豪斯學院。1940年6月29日病逝。他一生緻力於抽象與非具象錶現的探究，由觀念描述轉入視覺，從人物轉入大自然與曆史，乃至於純藝術的追求；他藉由象徵來傳達藝術理念，為後世畫傢樹立瞭一個嶄新的典範。

These abilities have left their record in the four intimate Diaries in which he faithfully recorded the events of his inner and outer life from his nineteenth to his fortieth year. Here, together with recollections of his childhood in Bern, his relations with his family and such friends as Kandinsky, Marc, Macke, and many others, his observations on nature and people, his trips to Italy and Tunisia, and his military service, the reader will find Klee's crucial experience with literature and music, as well as many of his essential ideas about his own artistic technique and the creative process.
