英國19世紀下半期最為特立獨行的天纔奧斯卡·王爾德，1854年10月16日齣生於愛爾蘭的都柏林。1874年，他進入牛津大學學習，鏇即以睿智的談吐、桀驁不馴的行為方式徵服社交界。他的文學造詣亦驚人深刻，包括童話《快樂王子》、小說《道林·格雷的畫像》、喜劇《溫夫人的扇子》以及他本人以法語創作、並由其同性戀情人阿爾弗雷德·道格拉斯譯成英文的劇本《莎樂美》。他的作品立意高遠，辭藻華美，成為英國唯美主義文學的最高典範。

1895年，道格拉斯的父親嚮王爾德提齣挑戰。王爾德將其送上法庭，他自己卻因而被捕入獄兩年，從此一蹶不振。1900年11月30日，王爾德孤寂地客死巴黎，終年46歲。社會終於完成瞭對於這個遺世獨立纔子的毀滅。

Written originally in French in 1892, Wilde's one-act tragedy Salome was translated into English by Lord Alfred Douglas, inspired some of Aubrey Beardsley's finest illustrations, and served as the text (in abridged form) for Strauss' renowned opera of the same name. A masterpiece of the Aesthetic movement, it enacts the biblical tale of a wanton woman's erotic dance and the martyrdom of John the Baptist. This volume reprints the complete text of the first English edition (1894), including "A Note on Salome" by Robert Ross.

I read the English version in PDF, so just randomly pick one for comments. Well recomposed from the story of Salome in Holy Bible. The scarlet terrifying love of desire was eventually punished, and the king who claimed to be afraid of nothing got fear as the ill omens came real. Far more profound than that I can even hardly tell.
