舞鶴是九０年代台灣文學最重要的現象之一。他的作品可以置於近年台灣情文學的傳統旗下觀之。他所呈現的「異質」的本土現代主義風格，已為日益僵化的主流敘述，注入另類聲音。《餘生》是舞鶴最新的長篇小說，以一九三一年發在霧社泰雅族馬赫坡社的「霧社事社」為故事背景，作者對一歷史事件別有所思，於九七、九八年二度來到泰雅清流部落停駐，並完泰雅部落事件餘生調查，作者言道：此書目的有三：探尋「霧社事件」的「正當性與適切性」如何，兼及「第二次霧社事件」；所居部落一位「姑娘的追尋之行」；在部落所訪見的餘生。他將此三事反覆寫成一氣，全文不分段落，讀來別有韻味。
