Unfortunately he's still there when an unseen assailant does Mrs. Sheldrake in . . . and then vanishes with the jewels. Bernie's got to come out of the closet some time. But when he does, he'll be facing a rap for a murder he didn't commit -- and for a burglary he certainly attempted -- unless he can hunt down the killer who left him hanging.

很有趣的竊賊（the Burglar）係列，可惜暫時沒找到#1。Bernie最大的魅力就在於將解謎探案、入室盜竊和彬彬有禮的日常生活融閤得恰到好處。情節稍微有些瑣屑，但是整個故事讀得很開心。這種義賊（gentleman thief）的角色設定在推理小說中已經不少見瞭。

且注意第九頁的雅賊宣言：my name is Bernie Rhodenbarr and I’m a thief and I love to steal. I just plain love it.　新星給的書稿缺第一章，於是先從原版看起，之後再對照檢閱翻譯質量吧.布洛剋原版的味道翻譯能齣四成我就很滿意瞭，何況我也發現目前的三本雅賊是三位不同的翻譯，還好原版的文風總歸是一緻的（不過我收的那十本也沒怎麼讀就是=。=）.四星原因對照新星的注釋，此處還有一點：新星版本電稿的校對不怎麼樣，原版自然無此問題.讀原版時紐約氣息撲麵而來，譯文反而就喪失瞭個性.或許對此種過於強調細節而忽視大情節（當然，這本已經比第一本布局更優瞭：不過，總歸是辛苦的賊頂替瞭警察的工作，做著偵探的事.另一個模式化就是：賊偵探總是難免被冤枉，然後流氓警察總得登場）的小情調消遣類小說而言，本身是不可調和的

第一次讀雅賊係列，應該算是推理小說瞭吧，對話也還有趣，第一人稱敘述顯得Bernie有點絮叨。
