杰作。作者通过文化社会学的视角追溯了”儿童拯救者“们如何利用含糊的定义、夸大的数据以及少数却暴力的个案来把”虐待儿童“构建成一个需要担心的、在“社会问题市场”上“卖得出去”的社会问题；媒体与流行文化产业在资源有限的情况下如何转述、包装这一“问题”来博人眼球；以及大众如何吸收、回应媒体所展现出的道德恐慌。每一个章节最后都跳出“虐待儿童作为社会问题”这一个案，点明文化视角对于claims-making这一套文献的贡献。最后作者关于儿童受害的担忧如何把七八十年代人们对于社会未来的焦虑与无力具象化为可控制的日常问题这一心理机制的展开以及对于其社会文化背景的讨论可谓是点睛之笔。

精彩的分析，聚焦了「儿童受害者」这个概念，分析其在当代美国社会的政策建构。借用了ideas market的观念。当然，70，80年代的特殊性有没有？没说。为什么这个案例在美国语境下表现地更强烈？也没说。不失为一本微观的佳作。
