圍繞 “裝飾與罪惡 ”作者展開瞭一番嚴密的論證以及對裝飾陋習追隨者的嚴厲抨擊。該文的核心論點是 “文化的進步與現代物品的去裝飾性是同義詞” 。即去除物品上的裝飾是文化進步的體現。接著，他列舉瞭裝飾行為在現代社會中的種種弊端： 1.裝飾行為在現代不具有文化有機連續性，它無過去無現在，亦無有未來。即無法在文化上承上啓下，它立於斷層之中。（換言之，裝飾是為瞭裝飾而裝飾） 2.它造成生産成本的提高，而卻不具有與之相應的價值。從而造成瞭社會資源浪費。例如一件裝飾華麗的衣服，穿一段時間就會厭棄。而一件無裝飾卻質量上乘的服裝可以被使用很久。 3.裝飾反映齣的是淺薄的審美內涵。它的美學持續性非常短暫。人們很快從某種裝飾中感到審美疲勞，從而厭棄並尋找新的裝飾物。作者還提齣，如果一件物品的美學持續力與它的物理持續力一樣的話
