Katherine Paterson1932年出生于中国江苏，当时其父母均在中国传教。1937年至1950年间，由于中国战场的战事，Paterson一家举家搬迁13次，这使得年幼的Katherine不得不一次次面对陌生且通常不友好的环境，孤独的童年生活使她喜欢上了写作。

Katherine的第一语言为汉语，但她最终熟练掌握了英文。1955年，于美国大学毕业后的Katherine打算去中国继续其父母的传教事业。但由于中国当时的政治状况，她不得不接受朋友的建议转而赴日本传教，在那里她学习了中国及日本文化，这对她之后的写作产生了重要影响。

Katherine于1976年出版的第一本儿童小说《The Sign of the Chrysanthemum》（《菊花标记》）即是一部日本神话故事。

1977年，Katherine出版了她最为著名的小说《Bridge to Terabithia》（《通往特雷比西亚的桥》）。该作品由于涉及死亡、校园霸凌等敏感主题而备受争议，并在英美等西方国家被列入英文研究课程所讨论的主题范畴。

可能是受到其幼年经历的影响，Katherine小说的主人公往往备受孤立，需要独自面对生活中的种种难题。

Katherine目前任美国非营利性组织国家儿童文学联盟副主席。
