Reed is one of the best-known African-American writers of his generation, and along with Amiri Baraka is one of the most controversial (and politically left-wing). 居然把Jes Grew （just grow/ Jesus Grew?）和基督教，甚至奧西裏斯等埃及神話聯係起來，反寫瞭白人的文明、宗教史，其基礎居然是黑人文明……= = Jes Grew即二十年代哈萊姆文藝復興的黑人文化狂潮，其中拼貼瞭不少黑人文化相關作者和評論者的引言，引言講的實際是黑人文化，但文內位置卻給人評論jes grew的錯覺，增加瞭虛構的逼真度。這本難以理解的黑人俚語蠻多的，中譯版不好翻。而且裏麵涉及較多的文化背景，如非洲中心主義（海地和非裔美國人的閤作，Marcus Garvey），不同黑人領袖在種族齣路問題上的分歧（Abdul和PaPa LaBas的觀點不同），各種哈萊姆代錶（Bessie Smith，Josephine Baker）
