For the Fourth Edition, new theoretical approaches, such as agency, materiality, and engagement theory, are added and earlier approaches analyzed afresh. Field methods and scientific techniques have been updated throughout, and new emphasis is placed on climate change and its impact on human affairs. 伦福儒先生应当是属于改良后的过程考古学者，也很重视诸多阐释主义考古学说。此书一再强调问题的重要性，诚如某些学者提出的，我邦的考古学多存在“史料即历史”的倾向。我暂时表示赞同。感受最强者无外乎此，走出历史文化考古学和迁移传播论的调子，好好问问自己要解决的问题...
