戴夫·艾格斯，生于1970年，美国新生代重要作家、出版人。艾格斯经历丰富。他还在念大学时，由于父母相继患病去世，他中止学业，照顾八岁的弟弟。2000年，艾格斯出版回忆录《怪才的荒诞与忧伤》（AHeart-breaking Work of Staggering Genius），一炮走红，不仅登上纽约时报畅销书榜冠军，还被《时代周刊》等媒体评为年度好书，入围普利策奖。艾格斯的代表作还包括反映苏丹内战中青少年历险生活的传记性小说What is the What（2006）和最新纪实作品Zeitoun（2009）。戴夫·艾格斯热心于公益事业。2002年，在旧金山创办青少年指导中心“826 Valencia”，指导青少年学习写作技巧，培养阅读习惯，至今已在美国七大城市成立分部。他还相继创办文学杂志《蒂莫西·麦克斯维尼季刊》和麦克斯维尼出版社。目前，戴夫·艾格斯与妻子和两个孩子住在旧金山湾区。

In a heartrending and astonishing novel, Eggers illuminates the history of the civil war in Sudan through the eyes of Valentino Achak Deng, a refugee now living in the United States. We follow his life as he's driven from his home as a boy and walks, with thousands of orphans, to Ethiopia, where he finds safety — for a time. Valentino's travels, truly Biblical in scope, bring him in contact with government soldiers, janjaweed-like militias, liberation rebels, hyenas and lions, disease and starvation — and a string of unexpected romances. Ultimately, Valentino finds safety in Kenya and, just after the millennium, is finally resettled in the United States, from where this novel is narrated. In this book, written with expansive humanity and surprising humor, we come to understand the nature of the conflicts in Sudan, the refugee experience in America, the dreams of the Dinka people, and the challenge one indomitable man faces in a world collapsing around him.

这本书很长，它是从一个难民的角度讲述了许多关于死亡、生存和苏丹人的生活。在读这本书以前，我一直不懂南苏丹和北苏丹为什么要战争、要独立、要分割，以为它就像中国的大陆和台湾一样，早晚会回归的。但是事实上，如果说以前还有可能，现在阿拉伯人的种种杀戮、肤色和文...  

在写评论之前纠结了好久，因为不想在就书中的故事而再分解重组，对它经行概述，变成一篇没有自己营养的东西，只是单纯的为了让别人了解这本书而写而已。很长时间之后我觉得更应该加入自己的想法和对内容的简介，这样可能过于个人化，但是在我看来却不让其显得过于空洞。大家想...

Sb. bought me a Kindle, and you have no sense of how long books are I realized it's a very long book, but it's just remarkable. It's the first Dave Eggers book I've read,I've read other stuff he's written. I think he's the best. The proceeds from the book all go to the ool that the characters created. He's such a unique writer and a wonderful guy
