作者在另一本书里曾提到，此书的副标题是由于“人力资本”的说法过于标新立异，为防风险才添加的，他早已不记得。现人习以为常的概念，需前人费尽心思的奠基。无论经济学走向何方，它终究是在进步的。

这是贝克早期的著作。这里面很多概念或创见都成为现实，如贝克认为教育是一种人力资本投资，而且投资越早回报越多。教育的投资回报如今是美国的热门话题（或者一直都是）。另外一些见解是公司在萧条期间会先裁掉边缘雇工，然后才慢慢裁到核心雇工。这本书里面的数学（公式）运用并不多，大部分都在附录里，属可读可不读内容。而其余部分，贝克则都用文字解释了。这本书虽是写给经济学家的，但（具有一定知识的）普通读者也可以理解。最后，推荐他的另一本专著－"A Treatise on the Family"。
