书名仿普林尼的自然史，想融合*有用的知识和有趣的掌故*（65页）。按年代顺序，将拉丁文学重要人物提点一下，穿插基础知识（罗马人名字、日历），重要拉丁词和概念会简单介绍。问题是实在太过简单，太过基础，是Wheelock引言、或者Elementary Latin Dictionary最前面基础知识板块的放大版，只适合本科生和对拉丁文无任何了解的初级读者。不明白为什么牛津，哪怕是牛津（美国），竟会出版这样简单而初级、可以一目十行的书，实在跌份。这样的科普书理应换一家商业出版社。全书第三部分是不足40页的语法要点概述，还配单词表和拉丁常用词组。总之不伦不类的。
