西美尔在这部著作中主要触及的是文化在现代社会中的自我分裂问题。一方面，客观的文化，即理智成果在作品、制度中的沉淀，变得日益精深和完善；另一方面，主观的文化，即能够被个人所体认的文化，则日益变得狭隘和浅薄。用西美尔的话说，文化如今像密封的盒子一样在人们手中传递，看似人们共有它，但其实没有任何一个人真正拥有它。在西美尔看来，真正有意义的文化只能是主观文化，因此现代性所提供的各种表达和沉淀的方式并无助于文化的进展。只有当它在当代的个人这里被重新激活，它才能真正进入存在。悖谬的是，对于个人来说，由于实际性的始终在场，任何文化表达总是有限的，表达带来的总是受限感，是对表达的不满。以此观之，客观文化乃是主观文化为了进展而采取的必要的外化环节，这与黑格尔有关精神的自我意识有赖于外化为自然的观点有内在关联。
