相比作者十年前的那本，这部更重视奴隶与社会的联系、政治、经济生产和释奴地位等比较传统的问题。仍然是比较调和的Finley式「奴隶主们还是人道的，残酷的是奴隶制度」论调，但是相比于上一本强调「奴隶主们还比较人道」，这本更多强调「奴隶制度很残酷」……可以做入门书啦。
