这本就是其中的第二本。实际上是一本会议的论文集，开的很早，1991年，书是1993年出，也很早，恰逢第一届APT。书中有四大主题，现代性的背景、民族主义、类型、后现代。实际上，重叠性不小。很多国家都在考察范围内，中国印度日本韩国泰国印尼马来西亚等。中国的有5篇，可谓重中之重。
