史學不講理論。這本史學書籍談理論還不錯。史學包括知識論、方法論和意識形態（但用於其他學科似乎也成立）。第三章尤其好，寥寥數頁結閤曆史事件概括瞭西方數韆年思想史（從對客觀的追求和深信不疑到後現代對啓濛和真的幻滅），極見功力。還討論瞭同情式理解、因果、曆史是科學還是藝術等問題。

早兩年看這本書的話，我可能會十分睏惑，同麵對哲學的懷疑主義一樣，一不小心就掉入瞭虛無主義的深淵。在發現什麼都不確定的事實之後，變得痛苦又沮喪。兩年之後再來看纔發現真正的信息被我徹底遺漏，不確定性打破的隻是幻想的夢“鏡”，自身的價值不是毀滅而是機會。這是一個能帶來無數可能的機會，一個能重新無數次發問的機會。從現代主義到後現代主義，曾經的“中心”被推翻再推翻；人們對待真相的態度也變成懷疑更懷疑。在破碎又強大的後現代語境中，絕對懷疑除瞭最初帶來的驚愕，已經失去瞭力量和價值。我想，不管是羅素的《哲學的問題》還是Keith的Rethinking History，其實都在說一件事：“追求一個，有且隻有一個的真相是看不到落日的長徵。在這個時代，不確定性或許是個福音，給每個可能帶來瞭話語。所以大膽地質問吧！
