研究啓濛運動的恢弘著作如Peter Gay之大作The Enlightenment固能全麵展現啓濛運動之特徵與狹隘，而近代思想史傢PORTER的這本小書以較小篇幅把十八世紀各國啓濛運動之共性與個性以及其中包含的問題要言不煩地指齣，實乃作者功力所顯。關於啓濛運動的教科書式、貼標簽式的種種淺見和誤解在此得到一定澄清。本書是本非常好的關於啓濛運動的入門讀物，書末的參考書單更是頗有價值。

語言上是連美國人都覺得dense的書，文體上基本算一篇對Peter Gay著作的critique，查著字典看完瞭的第一感覺是，啓濛運動都那麼久瞭，信星座的還是信，趕緊迴想一下Skinner的鴿子實驗，啓濛之路還長得很。知識的産生大概也是對人性的挑戰。敢於提問的人，真的很偉大。
