对于罗马的战争机制分析的很完整。只是为了学术史的目的才看的，以及很多观点都是在一些前提下提出的，作者都是在假定罗马生来就是要征服的前提下做出了一系列论调，但是如Arthur Eckstein所说，这个分析仍然是一个单方面的分析，还是应该放在整个地中海去看才是完整的。

真是一本大书...从Roman expansive imperialism的噱头过来的，展卷之后发现内容极为细致丰富。因为要论证扩张性帝国主义，除了要全方位探讨社会各阶层对战争的态度、战争与经济利益的相关程度这种不很复杂的话题之外，谨慎起见还得对这持续几个世纪的对外战争进行分期，尝试分析每一场战争背后的利益运作以及不同时期的政策倾向性。作者让Expansive imperialism在文献上站住脚的一个核心预设其实就是将罗马作家的defensive表述统统视作类似外交辞令一般的表面文章，而彼此对扩张的野望心照不宣。但其实作者写起来并没有像预设好的那么规整，相反他不厌其烦的探讨了很多细节，还划分了不同时期imperialism的表现形式，让可读性打了折扣。
