有些本末倒置，让维多利亚小说成了19世纪英国物质文化史的注脚。同样也有些循环论证，作者看了一些维多利亚物质文化史的书，然后用里面提及的物与小说里的物相匹配，去论证小说里同样的物体现了其时怎样的物质文化。如果要了解那段时期的物质文化概况，直接去读维多利亚物质文化史的书就好了呀，还读这些维多利亚小说干啥呢？所以作者论证的这些小说“证史”的特异性在哪里呢？此外，Freegood提倡说，要恢复虚构文本中事物的物质属性，就要尽力避免象征的诱惑，避免隐喻式的解读；但是，就像Bill Brown说的，我们思考蕴含于事物中的观念时，真的可以避免不被我们关于事物的观念（也即我们对事物的隐喻性象征性解读）所影响吗？“Probably not.”
