有些本末倒置，讓維多利亞小說成瞭19世紀英國物質文化史的注腳。同樣也有些循環論證，作者看瞭一些維多利亞物質文化史的書，然後用裏麵提及的物與小說裏的物相匹配，去論證小說裏同樣的物體現瞭其時怎樣的物質文化。如果要瞭解那段時期的物質文化概況，直接去讀維多利亞物質文化史的書就好瞭呀，還讀這些維多利亞小說乾啥呢？所以作者論證的這些小說“證史”的特異性在哪裏呢？此外，Freegood提倡說，要恢復虛構文本中事物的物質屬性，就要盡力避免象徵的誘惑，避免隱喻式的解讀；但是，就像Bill Brown說的，我們思考蘊含於事物中的觀念時，真的可以避免不被我們關於事物的觀念（也即我們對事物的隱喻性象徵性解讀）所影響嗎？“Probably not.”
