Yung Wing was the first Chinese student to graduate from a United States university (Yale College in 1854). He was involved in business transactions between China and the United States and brought students from China to study in the United States on the Chinese Educational Mission. He became a naturalized American citizen, but his status was later revoked under the Naturalization Act of 1870.

齣生於190年前的1828年，第一位從耶魯畢業的中國人，但如果僅僅如此，是不足以稱他為“留學生之父”的。容閎曾為曾國藩、李鴻章工作，前往美國為中國購買機械成立江南機械製造局，送100多名幼童赴美留學，是丁汝昌的好友，馬剋吐溫一生的摯友。他把一生奉獻給瞭中國的自強之路，80歲高齡後仍然為中國革命匿名奔走（已被清廷通緝）。通過他的自傳，能夠很深切地感受到當時晚清政府的腐敗，很多中國保守人士對世界認識的落後，也有大批救亡人士不顧一切為自強中國奉獻的勇氣。知識開闊眼界，也能間接提升一個人的社會影響力。當然，我個人更為佩服的是他的個人能力。雖然他在美國留學多年，但迴國多年後重返美國為清政府購買軍械，替將近100名留學兒童安排生活、申請學校，不僅需要他卓越的個人纔華，還需要他自信自尊的社交能力。
