Nancy Ray Smith (1930-1999) was a nationally known arts educator who championed the thouhtfulness of teachers and the place of artistic learning in children's development. She chaired the departments of art and art education at Wheelock College, Boston Univeersity, and the University of Oregon. In 1987 she established a preshool, The Center for Children in Waltham, MA. Her commitment to the role of the arts, research, and wise teaching is also documented in numerous articles and in the book, Symbolic Functioning in Childhood, edited with Margery B. Franklin.
