Instead, success came from its unacknowledged treatment arm, carried out jointly by banished urban doctors and rural educated youth. More broadly, the book reconsiders the relationship between science and political control during the ostensibly antiscientific Maoist era, discovering the important role of “grassroots science” in regime legitimation and Party control in rural areas.

作者認為這消滅瘟疫的過程其實是非常精英主義的，是“又紅又專”的悖論。

從血吸蟲病防治運動入手探討共和國時期國傢對地方農村對滲透和乾預。防治運動的成功與否取決於多方麵因素，過程往往是極為睏難和偶然性十足的。國傢不僅需要解決經費和組織上的問題，還需要改變民眾對自然、疾病和自己身體的認知。最終的理想結果是治療起到瞭比防疫更大的作用。從第四章開始討論科學知識和工具的構建、傳播和在治理中的應用，最後兩章尤為精彩。整體上材料紮實論證清晰但是牽扯到太多的問題，導緻個彆點上不夠深入。理應得到更多關注的一本書。

這本書的論點：並非是我們一般認為的預防，其實是對血吸蟲病的治療工作，纔是消滅血吸蟲運動成功的關鍵。grassroots science; scientific consolidation是中心詞。有意思的部分在於寫到地方農民和農村乾部的抵抗和不閤作。但是似乎一到文革，一切抵抗的力量都被政治熱情所消解。本書很明顯是博士論文修改而來，從結構、signposts上看似乎對博士論文並沒有很大改動。
