英文出版于1996年。中文版是去年出的。这本书一般被归入经济管理、金融类图书中。实际上我认为是统计学、概率论、博弈论三门学科的发展史。讲述了从1200年前开始的统计学、概率论的历史和1928年冯·诺依曼（书中译为冯·纽曼）开创的博弈论的历史。书中的故事大部分还算有趣。
