在童书作家中，罗伯特·罗素是为数不多的写画俱佳者，因此他能成为纽伯瑞和凯迪克的双料得主，绝非偶然，而他绝大多数作品的插画也由自己亲力亲为。《兔子坡》便是他最著名的作品，讲述新主人搬来前后，兔子坡诸动物的心理和生活变化，核心是人与动物的和谐与理解，因此既有欣喜若狂，也有挂虑猜疑，既有苦尽甘来，也有绝处逢生。全书英文文字流畅，黑白插画生动活泼，充满古典的童趣和爱意，1944年出版后即为罗素摘得了纽伯瑞奖的桂冠，而此后罗素也把自己的家园命名为“兔子坡”，作为永远的纪念。我藏有罗素两本签名本，一本《兔子坡》1944年初版本，是美国一家旧图书馆的作废处理书，扉页有罗素签名；一本《列维尔和我》1947年初版本，得自费城一家旧书店，有题赠有签名有时间，而落款恰恰是Rabbit Hill。
