取消论（eliminativism）不同于传统的物理主义：它不是要将心灵状态（信念、愿望等）还原为物理性质，而是从根本上攻击以这些状态描述心灵的范式，即民间心理学（folk psychology）。在论证层面，取消论将民间心理学及其依据的功能主义与在既往科学革命中被扫除的炼金术类比，以图揭示前者的无能；但恰恰是从同一个论证中，拥有不同的存在论的人反而能够发现化学对炼金术的胜利是一场可悲的胜利，是为了微观的可确证性放弃宏观的自然解释力的决定——总之，是对意义之发生的忘却。就其建立起神经科学与化学等的相似性而言，取消论至少在理论上是真诚的，它不像民间心理学的支持者那样虚无主义，即明明不相信心灵的独特性，却还要伪善地坚持它。取消论激化了由这种伪善所掩盖的矛盾，有助于人们选择自己真正认可的理论立场。
