史蒂文·夏平（Steven Shapin,1943-），當代著名的科學知識社會學傢、科學史傢。齣生於美國紐約，早年在裏德學院攻讀生物學，獲學士學位；後在賓夕法尼亞大學科學史與科學社會學係攻讀科學史，1972年獲博士學位。同年起至1989年任職於英國愛丁堡大學科學研究部，曆任講師、高級講師；1989年至2004年在加州大學聖迭戈分校任社會學教授；他與布魯爾、巴恩斯等人一起從事科學知識社會學研究，是愛丁堡學派的主要成員之一。主要著作包括：《利維坦與空氣泵：霍布斯、玻意耳與實驗生活》、《真理的社會史：17世紀英格蘭的文明與科學》，以及這本《科學革命》。

What historians have traditionally called the Scientific Revolution was, in Shapin's view, a diversity of practices and ideas that developed over the course of nearly two centuries. Rejecting the idea that there is anything like an "essence" of early modern science, the author shows that the Scientific Revolution in reality lacked the jarring abruptness and cataclysmic nature implied by its "revolutionary" name.

寫得特彆精彩，波義耳做實驗的片段甚至讓我激動不已。牛頓的理論，事實上是打破瞭過去所以為的天界人界各有一套法則，把人類和浩瀚的宇宙完全聯到瞭一起。從這個意義上講，真是開天闢地。

科學革命的知識社會學。關於知識的建構、結構。我覺得馬普所似乎也是這種路數。我現在似乎有點明白為什麼很多歐美很多大學的相關科係的全稱是“科學史和科學哲學係”。。興趣不大。無法細讀。。最後的書目不錯。

"Knowledge is power: the control of knowledge is conceived as an instrument of state power; knowledge has power to produce the means for technological control. The true legacy of Scientific Revolution is the organised collective method. I picked up this book from the part IB HPS reading list. An awakening call for my numb mind.
