此书观点不一，但有共同的针对点："中性"的功能人类学的殖民主义政治经济背景。人类学家以同情的态度去记录土著文化，并因此可以宣称对其所研究社会的文化遗产有贡献。但与此同时，对于殖民体系权利结构的维持，也有贡献。

Introduction, Wendy James, Talal Asad 3篇，Asad的批评比我想象的有力，但是在我看来，如果批判到这个程度，哪整个西方学术传统根本就没有存在的必要了。。。

C1 & C3。人类学与殖民主义交缠的学科历史几乎是原罪般的存在，但这种整体性的历史论调也是需要被反思的，无可否认二战前的经典人类学研究都是在殖民主义的political body下进行的，但这不能够说明那时的人类学家都是handmaiden of colonialism，比如EP对赞德人的研究就是为了破除当时殖民宗主国的种族歧视和文化优越感，比如马林诺夫斯基对非洲早期民族主义运动的支持，而且那时人类学还处于一个学科建设阶段，亟需建立学科权威、赢得政府支持（拉赞助），很多因素交织成了这段非常复杂和暧昧的历史。
