大熊貓的符號意義：新中國、現代、自然保護意識、友好親善等等中，沒有傳統曆史文化包袱這一點我還真是從來沒想過；從1956年鼎湖山（中科院管理）開始的迴顧也提供瞭中國自然保護的深層的、與國情相連的不斷變化的動因；作為禮物、短租與長租都是熟悉的內容，不過有些細節，比如因萌態而被忘卻的動物性本身，提醒我們自然保護的本質；90年代時候知道瞭箭竹開花熊貓餓死，看到80年代的宣傳功不可沒，誰成想其實靠70年代的研究基礎；四川真是瞭不起，意識與國際接軌，執行力強，但是也說明瞭管理仍然靠人治，人開明瞭就好說；林業強勢、地方中央關係等體製問題顯而易見。 “ the giant panda is much like modern China”，它是中國特色，也得益於中國特色。

“熊貓外交”的成功之處，就在於這些活生生的動物以其可愛無害的外錶消弭瞭政治算計的冷酷，作為中國國傢的象徵，大熊貓在國內和國外都讓中國的形象變得更柔軟、更有親和力，這正是這個正在快速崛起的國傢所需要的。既具備政治化同時又是去政治化的。
