大學有時可以是一個極其刻薄的地方，當年輕人反映齣這一點時，他們有的是鋒利的語言和智慧，卻沒有理智與憐憫。

在師生不倫之戀的通俗開場之後，作者設計瞭一個過渡性的敘事高潮，一個虛假的高潮——聰明、敏感、憤怒的女大學生茉德·史塔剋死於一場驀然到來的車禍。隨後，圍繞這場悲劇性死亡發生的一切人物的對話、思維，驟然顯示齣巨大的精神深度，各色人物在簡短的敘事視角中展示齣豐富的個性，衝突的本質體現為多元的宗教信仰博弈。前半部分悠長甚至具有某種纏綿悱惻的意味，後半部分的敘事速度驟然加快，作者對節奏的掌控，可稱遊刃有餘。但譽之為當代美國最偉大作傢之一，恐怕有些捧殺的嫌疑。
