In 1927 Swiss-French architect/painter Le Corbusier completed a house in a suburb of Paris called Garches. The house remains an icon of modern architecture. Other events in the visual arts that same year, including the release of the first talking picture, The Jazz Singer, and Fritz Lang's futuristic film, Metropolis, loom larger in the mind of the public. But this small didactic experiment in form-making by the architect many consider the greatest of the 20th century enjoys a significant place in art history. Aspects of Le Corbusier's Purist-painting-inspired villa at Garches were analyzed in a 1947 essay by British theorist Colin Rowe. Rowe discovered striking affinities between the structural grid of Garches (as the house is often referred to) and the spatial partitioning of 16th-century Italian Mannerist architect Andrea Palladio's Villa Malcontenta. Rowe's essay "The Mathematics of the Ideal Villa" has itself become an icon. Students of architecture will likely be familiar with Rowe's major ideas about Garches, including illumination of what has become popularly known as the Palladio-like ABABA rhythm of Garches's structural grid. In GARCHES 1 2 3 4 architecture theorist JEF7REY HILDNER revisits Rowe's conclusions about Garches, also known by its formal name, Villa de Monzie/Stein. Hildner addresses oversights and cuts through mythologies that Rowe's essay has generated. What he finds is surprising and significant. GARCHES 1 2 3 4 throws valuable new light on Le Corbusier's conviction that at Garches, more than at any of his other projects, "proportion ruled absolutely there, as absolute mistress." Based on a preliminary version published in the Journal of Architectural Education in 1999, HILDNER'S essay appears here for the first time in its final and fully illustrated FORM.
