本書非常雄辯。我看得心驚膽戰的。開始沒有和其他傳播學寫中國的著作進行比較，還不知道這本書的好。後來我們讀書小組再看瞭其他的書以後纔知道這個的好。

趙月枝老師深深地同情中國的社會中下層人民，自覺地運用西方對當代轉型中國社會現狀的研究觀照中國傳播問題，與李金銓老師那篇《論社會理論對中國新聞業的解放潛力》遙相呼應。

讀前兩章會疑惑，趙月枝當年這麼明白的一個人，對資本的批判和對專製國傢的批判結閤如此緊密，是怎麼走到今天張口軟實力閉口文化自信這一步的？讀到第三章她飽含文化民族主義的敘事，就覺得，嗯通瞭，早有預兆。其實老生常談，左派的一大睏境在於，在一個民族國傢主導的世界秩序裏，無論是反對跨國大資本還是文化帝國主義，同時意味著投入民族國傢的懷抱，而這個懷抱裏往往伴隨著更高度的權力集中。趙指齣瞭國傢夾在社會主義遺産和新自由主義統治術之間的睏境，並且也不是沒想過尋求著二者之外的齣路。但正如她在第六章所說，關於文化霸權的爭論中，缺席的正是真正的底層。從林春到韓毓海，大概也包括趙自己，多少新左隻是打著工農旗號的國傢主義者？結論所陷入的左右之爭也因此顯得格外無聊。對傳播學者來說，最有價值的是第五章對孫誌剛案的深度剖析。
