对于休谟来说，几何学里清晰明白的证明，和日常生活中可疑的论断，在本质上并无区别：它们的“对错”只是取决于它们"vividness"的多少而已。而vividness归根结底只是一种感情。如此说来，人类不是理性的动物，而是感性的。Treatise里好像有这么一句: Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions, and can never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them.
