故事講述的是美國西擴過程中的一些去挑戰荒地的pioneers。主人公是一女子Alexandra，任勞任怨，機智且有責任感。作者一方麵在書中錶現瞭對這些開荒者的尊重與崇拜，另一方麵也受到與她同一時代著名思想傢作傢愛莫生梭羅的超驗主義思想的影響，錶現瞭對自然及wildness的崇尚。這算是一個作者思想上的對立矛盾吧，因為開荒者們的目的恰恰是改造自然，徵服荒野。書中人物性格描寫得比較豐滿，值得一看。
