Richard M. Barnhart is John M. Schiff Professor Emeritus of Art History at Yale University.

王方宇（1913~1997），生于北京，1936 年毕业于北京辅仁大学教育系。 1944 年负笈美国， 1946 年美国哥伦比亚大学硕士毕业。因八大山人作品收藏家和研究者闻名于世。

王方宇教授最富盛名的是作为特立独行的佛门画家八大山人的研究权威。八大是明皇室遗胄，与王方宇相似，在他很小的年岁就显示出过人的智性。1644年明朝灭亡，八大的生活进入一个混乱的状态，自此到他后来出山的近五十年时间中，他创造了大量书画作品，今天有他数量众多的作品存世。

王方宇在八大山人的生活和艺术方面有创造性的研究，有多种研究成果出版，最后出版的是有关八大深度研究的重要著作《荷园主人》。王教授也是一位收藏家。所有收藏家都会受到时间、财力以及专门知识的限制。尽管作为一位大学教授囊羞涩，王教授还是将他的菲薄收入投到八大山人作品的收集上，建立了世界上最大的八大山人作品的私人收藏，一些收藏现存于华盛顿史密森尼尔博物院下属的佛利尔美术馆。
