From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up ``Anger, frustration, depression, immaturity, insecurity and a diminished sense of self-worth,'' are cited in the introduction to this book as common qualities of youthful drug abusers. Lee names the widespread availability of crack coupled with inadequate preventative educational programs as causes of the current drug crisis among teenagers. She presents several detailed case studies which graphically portray the alienation and degradation of drug dependent young lives. She also gives hopeful outlooks for such cases, if help in the form of a strong rehabilitation program is found in time. Several residential and nonresidential programs available in the New York City area are mentioned . One chapter describes several organizations that are dedicated to the prevention of substance abuse and other adolescent problems. A final section and an appendix give descriptions of a large number of commonly used drugs, their origins, pharmacological classifications, and clinical uses. Despite Lee's claim that anyone is susceptible to drug dependency, Breaking the Connection focuses on urban teenagers and emphasizes the special vulnerability of those with unhappy family relationships. Rhoda McFarland's Coping with Substance Abuse (Rosen, 1987) will probably be more useful for a younger suburban audience from a wider range of socio-economic backgrounds. Sue A.
