How can I save enough to pay for the kids college? Are bonds really
safe? Is this a good time to invest in stocks? Which bank is best? How can
I cut my taxes? What s the best way to get into real estate? What s the
smartest way to save for retirement ? Which investments will beat infla-
tion?
The mission of the reporters, writers, and editors of Money magazine
since its first issue in October 1972 has been to answer those questions
and hundreds like them about personal finance. The questions must be
readdressed from year to year because the answers change with the times.
There being no eternal wisdom about how to conduct one s financial
affairs, a pure anthology of Money articles would be perishable indeed.
Yet an astonishing amount of the published material contains enduring
truths. A reader who sat down to Volume 1, Number 1 of the magazine
and plowed through to Volume 15, Number 12 (December 1986), the
span of this book, would arise exhausted, it s true, but in possession of
much valuable and usable information.
The Money Book of Money spares you the trouble while giving you the
essence. It includes a few articles virtually as written, but in the main
each chapter takes from two or more of the most recent articles on the
same or related subjects. In addition to regular issues of the magazine,
material comes from single-topic Money Guides, which we publish twice
a year, and from other projects still in preparation. The style of the
magazine follows the journalistic principle of finding out what s new and
pertinent about a topic --- whether it is divorce or financing a house or
