The first edition of Today s Mathematics was published over twenty-one years ago. Much has happened in
mathematics education since then and this popular text continues to keep up-to-date and to reflect the lat-
est trends in the teaching of mathematics to children. As the sixth edition goes to press, it reflects several
significant changes. I have retired and am now a professor emeritus of Kent State University. This has
opened doors for many new professional experiences such as teaching at the University in Malawi, helping
to develop a new national mathematics syllabus there, and providing in-service training for many African
teachers.
I am pleased to announce another significant change as I welcome Dr. William R. Speer to work with
me in keeping Today s Mathematics current and usable. He completed his Ph.D. in mathematics educa-
tion with me at KSU and has developed an outstanding record as a writer, as a researcher, and as a
distinguished professor at Bowling Green State University.
Dr. Speer and I have agreed to retain all of the features of Today s Mathematics that have made it so
popular. Each unit has been carefully evaluated and revised, incorporating valuable suggestions received
from students, professors, and others. Unit 1 has been comPletely revised with an added section summa-
rizing the mathematical content for each grade level, kindergarten through sixth. The checklist has been
revised to reflect how children learn mathematical concepts and skills. The calculator and microcomputer
content has been edited and updated to reflect the latest trends. The activities at the end of each unit have
been screened and new activities have been added. At the request of the users of Today s Mathematics, a
teachers manual will now be available.
Dr. Speer and I wish to dedicate this, the sixth edition of Today s Mathematics, to Dr. Marijane Werner.
Dr. Werner was a colleague, fellow mathematics educator, and dedicated professor. We respected Dr.
Werner for her understanding, thoroughness in her work, preciseness, helpfulness, and untiring energy.
Dr. Werner helped both of us grow personally and professionally.
We wish to express our gratitude to the reviewers and contributors who have offered valuable sugges-
tions and comments. For these many fine contributions, we are indebted. Thank you.
