An English major, teacher and former radio sportstalk
show host, Steve Heldt thinks he s well qualified to have
written THE BATHROOM BASKETBALL BOOK.
He is, but there s much more to his background that lends
itself to this sort of thing. And for that, I went directly to
the source. Enter Clara Heldt, Steve s morn-- and a nicer
woman you won t meet. Mrs. Heldt says the author was
potty-trained between the ages of two and three. In fact, to
this day there is a crease on the family toilet seat from
where little Stevie s potty-seat was fastened. (Steve, that
little duck s head on the front of the seat was a real curie
pie from what your mother tells me.)
As soon as Steve was able to read, he was reading in the
bathroom ... the sports pages, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED,
SPORT. You name it, Steve read it. And, Mrs. Heldt claims,
"Stevie always read with his little baseball cap on."
Little Stevie got bigger, but not big enough. A good athlete,
he Just wasn t tall enough to play basketball according to
his morn. But read about it, he did. Like Jordan to the air
and Magic to the hoop, it was Steve to the hopper.
And so goes the evolution of the man and his book.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Heldt had a favorite bathroom pastime of
her own. Though she doesn t do it any more because her
eyesight s not what it used to be, she thinks it might make
for a good book subject. It would be appropriately called
THE BATHROOM CROCHET BOOK.
